Telecel Zimbabwe has put in place infrastructure to support an array of innovative Value Added Services, in addition to the standard cellular phone services. By exploiting existing GSM infrastructure it is providing functions not previously associated with the general GSM user or the standard cellular phone.

The network offers both prepaid and post-paid services. The subscriber has the option to choose between per minute billing or per second billing. For more on the current rates, please visit the Tariffs and Payment Plans page.

The basic SIM Card (mobile phone line) costs US$1 and includes US$1 airtime that can be used to call other Telecel numbers. Bonus airtime of $0.50 available for on-net calls is also included. Starter Packs, which include a handset as well as a SIM Card and airtime, range in price, depending on the choice of handset, from US$17. Conference Calls

This flexible and easy-to use service enables three or more individuals to concurrently hold a conversation via their mobile phones. It is ideal for business people who wish to conduct meetings on the move. Only the initiator of the calls is charged. Private calls can be taken while a conference call is in progress.

The facility is available for contract lines. It can conference up to seven people.

Call Forwarding/Diverts

When a contract line customer is busy, out of range of network coverage or has a handset that is not functioning properly, calls can be automatically forwarded to another Telecel number, using the call divert service.

Roaming Services

Contract line customers can, provided they pay in advance, take advantage of the Roaming Services facility to make and receive calls from their normal Telecel number when they are in other countries. The advance payment can be made at any Telecel office in Zimbabwe.

Mobile Internet Services

Telecel will soon be providing Mobile Internet Services, which allow direct internet access on the customer's mobile phone.

This will also make possible a broad spectrum of services not supported by GSM networks.
Tests are currently being run to ensure that there is enough bandwidth for the services.

Call Waiting

The call waiting service allows a subscriber to receive more than one call at the same time. When a subscriber with the call waiting function activated is busy on the phone and a new call comes in, he/she receives a message that a call is holding. The subscriber can put the active call on hold to attend to the new one. When finished with the new call, he/she can still return to the initial call.

Call waiting allows the subscriber to attend to even more than two calls at the same time. He/she can switch between the calls as they come in by putting each of them in turn on hold.

Electronic Billing

Electronic billing is the quickest, most reliable and most convenient bill delivery system. Telecel contract subscribers can receive their cellphone bills via their cellphone as soon as the billing process is complete.

Mobile Content

Mobile Content service enables customers to access on their mobile phone screen sports updates, bible verses, jokes of the day and other information via the SMS facility. Once a customer subscribes to these services updates can be sent directly to their mobile handsets.

A customer can choose to subscribe weekly or request particular information wherever they are and whenever they wish via the short message service facility. More information will be made available as time goes on and will include weather, financials, headlines, restaurant guide, cinema guide and lotto among others.

To subscribe to Mobile Content all the customer has to do is to send a prescribed short code number..

Airtime Transfer

Credit can be transferred between two Telecel prepaid accounts by sending a text message (SMS) to 350 with the amount to be transferred and the cellphone number to which the airtime is to be sent.

The minimum amount that can be transferred is $2. The maximum is $300. Only credit acquired by loading money from a Tell Someone airtime card can be transferred.

Remote Recharge

This refers to the process of recharging a Telecel prepaid subscriber's account by sending as a text message to 350 a recharge number, # symbol plus the number of the mobile phone that is to be recharged. This facility can also be used to recharge accounts that have been suspended.

This service is charged for at the SMS rate.

Call Barring

This service allows a subscriber to filter calls to his or her mobile number. By activating this service one can specify the criteria to be met by all incoming and outgoing voice calls.

Call Me Back

This facility allows a Telecel subscriber to send a free SMS to another mobile number asking to be called back.

To do this, the subscriber enters on the phone *140*, the number to which the "call me back" message is to be sent and #. The call button is then pressed. A "call me back" notification is immediately sent to the other mobile number.

Missed Call Alert

By subscribing to this service a Telecel subscriber can receive notifications of any calls that have been missed when the cellphone was either out of network range or switched off.

To subscribe to this service, press *556# and then press the call button. You will be guided through the missed call alert process.

Mobile Banking

Mobile banking is the latest technology to be offered by Telecel that will allow everyone, from the banked to the unbanked to bank on their mobile phones. This technology will be powered by several banks so as to allow Telecel subscribers the freedom of choice where banking services are concerned.

One will need to open a virtual account which is different from a normal bank account but functions better than a normal bank account. Opening an account is easy; all that is required is ones full name, ID number and an active Telecel line. Customers will only need to visit a participating bank of their choice to open the account and everything after that will be done via their mobile phone.

Some of the many advantages of mobile banking include:-

  • affordability (charges are in cents)
  • security through the removed need to carry cash around
  • convenience of being able to bank anywhere and anytime
  • reliability through the ability of the system to inform the subscriber all account activity

Through mobile banking, customers will be able to do the following:-

  • Withdraw and deposit money
  • Transfer money across all networks and banks
  • Buy airtime
  • Pay utility bills
  • Check balances and mini-statements.
